These are very rough at the moment, so i'm looking forward to the time when I can get a chance to really finese them. I've been working toward an exhibition so things have been busy, busy, busy. I'm really keen to develop a stronger approach with the use of mixed media in the character work that I'm doing. So many character designs for commercial animation are brilliant and beautifully executed, but have a very typical and generic look. I want to experiment and try something different.

It'd be good to post my observational stuff regularly. It'll keep the ol' "oomph" up. I find it easier to check the progress when the work is online rather than scrawling through screeds of sketchbooks. You always tend to go through stages of drawing obsessiveness and then becoming a drawing bum. Never stop sketching. I do wish in times of panicking,"what do I do next" I still at least kept sketching or painting. Anyway, blah, blah...I'm back!

Two quick character sketches, pencil drawings coloured using Photoshop. I didn't spend too much time doing them as I got to a point where I felt I would rather move on. More of a practice run, to get my colouring speed up and feel more comfortable painting in this way. Although I see so much of this style around. I intend to strengthen skills in both mixed media and digital painting, to be able to confidently combine the two and adapt style to suit the character of what I'm doing.

This was a concept sketch for "Transported"by Christine Findlay. Could be described as a typical family day out in the heart of Dundee.
Working through, finding a way of combining mixed media, I love that experimental approach, with my character design style. I don't feel it's quite there, but I have a deadline of a show in September so that's a great motivator. I think it's going to really help me work through some problems.
I'm also really keen to get going on some environment/setting sketches. I've already started so hopefully, I'll be posting the outcomes soon.

This is from the painting and drawing class I go to. I was pleased I managed to do more of the figure. I get gripped by portraiture and focus on the head, so drawing the full figure is something I need to pay more attention to. It also helps bring a narrative to a drawing which is what I feel I need to develop.

This was a submission for Ironbratz which was having a launch to promote a new novel, Mavis's Shoe. Work submitted had to be based on themes dealt with in the novel. The novel was based at the time of the Clydebank Blitz during the Second World War.

I've been setting myself short deadlines, I've been pushing to see what I can achieve in a short amount of time. Challenging and good! It's helping to build the folio.

Haven't done much of this kind of painting-acrylic. This was the first live sitting I've done. I really prefer oils, but the speed in which these fellas dry is super quick, which means I can be bolder with making mistakes and being more confident slapping the paint down

This was done in the last minute of the sitting. He's good a good old moody pus on him, but I quite liked it. I want to get more of that kind of energy into my paintings and pastel work.

These were sketches and illustrations of ideas for a short story written by local writer, Christine Findlay. We didn't discuss any visuals or ideas of what the characters may look like, so I had complete freedom.

The author did a reading of the story and told it so brilliantly well that it gave me an instant idea of how they might look.

I'm not familiar with pastels and these have been my first drawings more or less. But you can really be quite harsh with them and still get something that's got a bit of energy about it! I'm going to push this medium and see where I go!
This drawing was a fairly quick sketch. I like it better than the one below which looks a bit peely-wally to me. Overworked perhaps.

For developing character I'm working from observational studies, exaggerating, characterturing (hopefully you know what I mean here, is that even a word? If in doubt-make one up) until I get a good feel of character. I'm going to work on this method, push it more to perhaps get into a style that I feel comfortable and confident with.

I need to build confidence in experimenting with a variety of art materials, get used to handling media, creating mixed media images that are both a combination of digital and experimental pieces. But all stemming form observational studies. The plan is that this way of working will take me into a more interesting, illustrative use of character design for concept work-that's the plan!
